Teaching Marine Science to Kids: Engaging Lessons for Ages 7 and Up
Marine science is a fascinating subject for kids, offering endless opportunities to spark curiosity about the ocean and its ecosystems. Whether you’re homeschooling, tutoring, or teaching in a classroom, introducing marine science to children can be both educational and fun. Below is an overview of lesson ideas and resources to help you guide young learners through four key areas of marine science: Oceanography, Marine Biology, People and the Oceans, and Prehistoric Oceans.

Unit 1: Oceanography
Oceanography lays the foundation for understanding the vast and interconnected marine world. For ages 7–8, this unit introduces:
- One Big Ocean: Teaching about the five ocean basins, their locations, and what makes up the ocean.
- Weather and Climate: Exploring how the ocean influences weather patterns and climates.
- Ocean Exploration: Learning about maps and the tools scientists use to study the ocean.
Recommended Videos:
- Learn Bright’s Oceans of the World (Introduction to the five oceans).
- General map concepts for kids (a non-ocean-specific introduction).
Unit 2: Marine Biology
Marine biology captivates kids with the incredible diversity of ocean life. This unit covers:
- Ocean Plants: Understanding what plants are, their types, parts, and life cycles.
- Ocean Animals: Exploring animal groups, anatomy, habitats, and life cycles.
- Ocean Ecosystems: Introducing ecosystems, food chains, and the communities that thrive within them.
I also include an ‘Ocean Animal Research Project’. Students choose a marine animal, list what they know and want to learn, and complete a fact file. They can draw the animal’s life cycle, create a summary report, and illustrate their findings.

Unit 3: People and the Oceans
This unit helps students connect with the ocean and understand its importance to humans. Key topics include:
- The Earth is Our Home: Activities like a creative writing exercise about living in the ocean, designing ocean characters, and mapping an underwater story.
- Ocean Conservation: Teaching kids about beach etiquette, identifying man-made vs. natural objects, and recycling.
- Ocean History: Exploring significant events like the Titanic and historical figures like James Cook.

- Save the Ocean by Bethany Stahl.
- Captain James Cook by ABC Australia (available in BTN video playlists)
Unit 4: Prehistoric Oceans
Prehistoric oceans are a fun, engaging topic that captures children’s imaginations. This unit focuses on:
- What is a Prehistoric Ocean Animal? Exploring their appearance, habitats, diets, and sizes.
- Prehistoric Animal Fact Files: Encouraging kids to research and create a profile for five prehistoric animals, complete with illustrations and key facts.

- Retro fossil exploration videos (great for sparking discussions, even if the visuals feel dated!).
